In the letter, Sax acknowledged that proper fencing would prevent the South Street tract from becoming subject to “the mercy of wandering children.” Kelley, asking for Kelley’s help in hastening a fencing project around the same pond John drowned in that year. In June of 1953, Arboretum Director Karl Sax wrote to Boston Park Commission Chair Frank R. John’s attempted rescuer, Ken Hobart, asked the Globe in that same story: “How many times does something like this have to happen before anyone does something about it?” They received no response, and their “furor subsided with time and nothing was done,” wrote the Boston Globe nearly two decades later. Outraged by the danger the Arboretum’s poorly-maintained spaces posed to their children, about 300 residents signed and delivered a petition to Harvard to fill the pond in. Playing in an Arboretum pond area used as a dumping ground for industrial waste, John fell in and drowned. John, age 9, went to play in the nearest green space available to him - the Arnold Arboretum, the Harvard-managed public park and botanical institute across the road. Charged with postwar energy, the neighborhood was full of immigrant families eager to adopt a life outside of the urban core. Wooden swamp mats are also useful when working on soft sediment or edges of lakes to help decrease the ground pressure and prevent the excavator from sinking in the mud.In 1953, John Geehan was growing up in a changing Roslindale, Mass., seven miles from downtown Boston. These excavators allow for removal of sediment all the way across many ponds and lakes. Long reach excavators have extended booms capable of 50-70’ in length. The best solution is a special excavator built for dredging, called a long-reach excavator. Futhermore, limited sediment can be placed next to the excavator because it is typically very wet and runs back under the excavator tracks. As you increase the depth the bucket moves closer and the length decreases dramatically. The issue with 15-25’ is that it is the maximum dredging if you were straight out. Small mini-excavators typically reach up to 15’ horizontally and larger excavators can increase the length up to 25’. Mini-excavators, midi-excavators, and large excavators all have different bucket sizes, weights, and length of reaches. Excavators are available in many different sizes. Dredging the sediment with an excavator is also an option.
